A superb French Empire period mantel clock in finely chased ormolu (mercury-gilded bronze) and patinated bronze, circa 1810. The clock depicts a classical female figure representing Clio, the muse of history, seated beside a fluted column inscribed with signs of the zodiac. The 3.5-inch enamel dial with Roman numerals houses an eight-day silk-thread suspension movement with striking on a bell. The rectangular plinth base features applied ormolu mounts of laurel wreaths and classical motifs. Height: 40cm. Recently serviced, keeping excellent time.
