A fine Victorian brass compound microscope manufactured by R & J Beck of London, circa 1870. The instrument features a lacquered brass body tube with rack-and-pinion coarse focus and fine micrometer adjustment, a rotating nosepiece with three objective lenses (×4, ×10, ×40), a sub-stage condenser with iris diaphragm, and a plano-concave mirror for illumination. Housed in its original fitted mahogany case with a set of prepared specimen slides, a brass stage forceps, and a bull’s-eye condenser lens. Height: 35cm. A beautiful marriage of science and craftsmanship.
